Elevation

What changes as you climb

The same plan does not work at 5,300 feet and at 7,500. These are the differences we plan around.

  • The plains

Denver and the suburbs around it. Hot summers, clay soil and the most hail. Blue grama, penstemon, blanket flower and yucca do well.

  • The foothills

Golden, Morrison and Evergreen. Springs run weeks behind, and slopes and deer shape the plant list. Seed mixes lean toward mountain grasses.

  • Above 8,000 feet

Short seasons and early snow. We plan around a frost-free window of only a few months, and seeding goes in before the first snow.
